While Carol, the latest film from director Todd Haynes (Far From Heaven, Velvet Goldmine), isn’t expected to hit theaters until November, the period drama has already made an impression as perhaps one of the more distinctive movies of the year to keep an eye out for. The drama, based on the novel by Patricia Highsmith (The Talented Mr. Ripley), stars Oscar winner Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine) and Oscar nominee Rooney Mara (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) as women who unexpectedly fall for one another in 1950s-era New York.
Carol made its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year where Mara won the Best Actress prize. Before the film opens up stateside, The Weinstein Company is looking to solidify the movies’ awards potential with runs at few other major film festivals. Friday evening saw the North American premiere of the movie at the Telluride Film Festival, where critical reaction appeared to be just as strong as was back in May when Carol debuted at Cannes. Along with a screening at Telluride, the film festival also held a special tribute for Mara (who was in attendance at the Colorado festival alongside director Haynes). While Mara is young actress with a limited (albeit impressive) list of credits, that’s part of the clout a major award at Cannes will get you with a film expected to do well with Academy members.
