Charlotte Rampling Cast in ‘Blessed Virgin’, Paul Verhoeven’s Lesbian Nun Drama

Yes, that Paul Verhoeven. The director who gifted the world with RobocopTotal Recall, Showgirls, Starship Troopers, and Basic Instinct is bringing us a dramatic film of the nun-lesbian variety. The movie is based on a true story and set in 17th-century Italy, where a nun experiences disturbing religious and erotic visions. She is assisted by a female companion, and their blossoming love affair leads to disastrous consequences. His directing announcement came just two days ago, and we have already received news about the next casting for the film.

Blessed Virgin stars Virginie Efira (Elle), who has worked with Verhoeven in the past, as Benedetta Carlini, the nun who experiences the aforementioned visions. Oscar nominee Charlotte Rampling, known for her work on 45 Years, has been cast in a supporting role, though it is not clear who she will be playing. Rampling was recently seen in Red Sparrow, Hannah, and Assassin’s Creed.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, shooting is planned to begin in August, and the film will release sometime in 2019. SBS Productions will produce the movie, while Pathe will handle distribution of the film in France. SBS also produced 2016’s Elle, which is Verhoeven’s latest film.
