Variety has exclusively learned that Roadside Attractions and Samuel Goldwyn Films have acquired the U.S. distribution rights for Aline, a biopic based loosely on the French Canadian chart-topping Celine Dion. The critically acclaimed Aline premiered out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival.
Lemercier, a renowned French actor and stand-up comedian, directed, co-wrote with Brigitte But, and appears in the film as Aline Dieu, a singing prodigy who grew up in 1960s Quebec surrounded by her close-knit family of 13 siblings.
The film follows Aline (who is supposed to be Celine Dion) from her upbringing through her unexpected emergence as a global sensation, demonstrating her remarkable metamorphosis. The film focuses on Aline’s relationship with her producer and mentor, who later became her husband while depicting her juggling a demanding profession and parenthood.
Sylvain Marcel, Danielle Fichaud, Roc Lafortune, Antoine Vézina, Pascale Desrochers, and Jean-Nol Brouté co-star with Lemercier. Victoria Sio, Aline’s singing voice, was picked from a pool of 50 vocalists by Lemercier and the producers.
“Valérie’s tour de force performance as an emerging worldwide singing superstar created an enormous splash at Cannes this year, and we think American audiences will be every bit as thrilled to discover this one-of-a-kind entertainer in movie theaters early in 2022,” said Roadside and Goldwyn in a joint statement.
Aline is expected to be released in U.S. theaters in early 2022.
