The late Carrie Fisher‘s brother, Todd Fisher, has confirmed that the actress’s likeness as Princess Leia/Leia Organa Solo will be used further in the Star Wars series, at least up until Colin Trevorrow’s Episode IX. He and Fisher’s daughter Billie Lourd both gave Disney exclusive permission to use recent footage for the 2019 film.
Fisher had already completed filming on Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi before her passing late last year. Todd Fisher broke the news at the TCM Film Festival in Los Angeles this past week, saying “Both of us were like, ‘Yes, how do you take her out of it?’ And the answer is, you don’t.'”
The extent of her role in Episode IX is unclear, although Disney has revealed that they are not looking to digitally re-create the actress in future films, as they did in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story to show Leia in her younger form.
Before Episode IX, audiences will see Fisher in The Last Jedi, due for release at the end of this year on December 15. Rian Johnson directed the film for which “Poe Dameron” actor Oscar Isaac compared it to “making an independent film.”
