American film and television writer, director and producer Bryan Singer has had his latest project shelved by its home studio amidst the controversy of his sexual misconduct allegations. Millennium Films has indefinitely put off work on Red Sonja with the director now wanted to be removed from the project all together.
The company behind films like Hunter Killer and The Expandables series informed Deadline that, “the project is not on the slate at the moment and is not for sale at the EFM in Berlin.” Singer has had a history of sexual assault allegations for a little over twenty years at this point, with multiple men stating that he conducted various actions of abuse and even rape. Despite this, the Bohemian Rhapsody director has been supposedly poised to make around $40 million from the Academy Award nominated and successful biopic.
Following a set of new allegations this year, many organizations and parties in the wave of Time’s Up have been calling for him to be dropped by studios. Millennium films CEO Avi Lerner stated support for the director during the initial backlash towards the move to retain Singer as director on Red Sonja. More backlash ensued and Singer has not been officially removed as its director, but the film, that was to begin shooting later this year, is no longer a priority with the studio. There is still a possibility that Singer will direct the film of the bikini armor warrior who appeared first in Marvel’s Conan The Barbarian comics, but its future is not clear as of now.
