After Burt Reynolds’ sudden passing this past month, what would have been the actor’s final role in Quentin Tarantino‘s Once Upon A Time in Hollywood was left vacant. Deadline reports that Reynold’s longtime friend and Tarantino collaborator, Bruce Dern, will be taking over the film’s role of George Spahn.
Dern is currently filming Remember Me in Spain, but will be leaving that production soon to join Tarantino’s in Los Angeles.
Tarantino and Dern recently worked together in The Hateful Eight when Dern played the pissed off Confederate General Sanford Smithers. This time around, he will be portraying a character pulled from real life. As Once Upon a Time explores the time in Hollywood surrounding Charles Manson and the Sharon Tate murders, audiences will see some of Manson’s time at 80-year-old Spahn’s ranch. Spahn reportedly rented out his Los Angeles ranch frequently for old westerns and allowed Manson and his followers to stay there leading up to these criminal acts. It is rumored that in order to pay him rent, Manson would have his female followers perform him sexual favors and act as his seeing guide.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is currently filming and also stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Al Pacino, Kurt Russell, Dakota Fanning, Lena Dunham, Austin Butler, James Marsden, Michael Madsen, Tim Roth, Timothy Olyphant, Damian Lewis, Emile Hirsch, Luke Perry, Scoot McNairy, and James Remar.
The film will hit theaters on July 26, 2019.
