Bret McKenzie Writing Fantasy Script for Warner Bros.

Flight of the Conchords actor/writer Bret McKenzie is ready to take the fantasy-musical world by storm with his latest script, Moonland, according to The Tracking Board. The film is being developed by Warner Bros. and will see McKenzie reunited with his Muppets director James Bobin. The duo have already had great movie-musical success together after The Muppets led McKenzie to winning the Academy Award for Best Original Song.

Back in 2013, McKenzie told Collider about a fairy tale musical comedy that he was working on that would combine story and tonal elements from Labyrinth and The Princess Bride, both classic ’80s family films. It looks as though Moonland is that picture. The story is said to follow an 11-year-old girl who is transported to a magical land by a homemade flying bicycle. When she arrives, she is captured and is later tasked to help a knight rescue a princess – all the elements of a picture-perfect classic hero story.

McKenzie clearly has a flare for humor after earning huge success at home in New Zealand as well as in the United States with his HBO comedy Flight of the Conchords, co-created with Jemaine Clement. He will likely bring a quirky twist to the classic hero tale, and seeing him writing music again makes the project all the more promising.
