Box Office Update: ‘The Grudge’ Disappoints, ‘Rise of Skywalker’ Continues Lead

The first weekend of the new year has passed, with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker keeping its lead in the box office for the third week in a row, while newcomer The Grudge opened at number four with a mere $11 million amid poor reviews.

January is typically home to such mid-grade horror films, with The Grudge joining a long list of winter-released scary flicks estimated to make a quick buck at the box office. However, considering its CinemaScore grade of F and mere 17% on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s unlikely the film will take home enough to make a profit, especially considering its $10 million budget.

Jumanji: The Next Level kept its number two spot, earning $26.5 million in its fourth weekend for a domestic total of $236.2 million. Little Women followed at number three for its second weekend, experiencing just a 19% decline in ticket sales for a gross of $13.6 million, leaving the film’s total domestic earnings at $60 million.

Despite The Rise of Skywalker staying in the lead, the film experienced a 54% decline in sales, making for a weekend gross of $33.7 million for a domestic total of $450.8 million to date.
