Box Office – The Super Mario Bros. Movie Jumps To Projected New Record $368M Worldwide

The Mario Brothers are currently on their way to beating several box office records, including a $368M worldwide box office global start. Additionally, the famous duo is currently coursing a $195.3M 5-day domestic opening alongside a projected $137M 3-day.

With this global headstart, Super Mario Bros. is set to become the most prominent animated opening of all time, beating Frozen II’s record of $358M. While this is only a projection, the film has been on a great track, especially with a $173M overseas draw from 70 markets. This is a win for animation and video game movies, beating World of Warcraft’s $210M worldwide opening and Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s $72.1M stateside 3-day opening.

Illumination’s record-breaking film is popular at the box office and with audiences internationally and domestically. According to Screen Engine’s Post-Trak, 94% of the polled audiences responded positively, with 82% recommending it to others. Additionally, 94% of kids under 12 had an overwhelmingly positive response, as 64% recommended. Even Cinemascore gave the film an A rating from Wednesday’s first-day audiences.

Based on this combination of audience and financial success, it’s no surprise that these plumbers have scrounged up a well-rounded audience. Of the 60% male audience members, 62% were 18-34, and 33% belonged to the 18-24 quad. Diversity demos have shown Latino and Hispanic audiences leading the charge at 41%, Caucasians following behind at 30% alongside 15% Black audiences and 14% Asian/other.

This incredible amount of success can more than likely guarantee a possible return to the Mushroom Kingdom.
