As someone who has always been interested in sketchy rehab stories, John Swab’s upcoming new indie movie Body Brokers seems like a perfect opportunity to look into this reality. Collider has exclusively debuted a trailer to the film, and it shows a sneak peek into Frank Grillo (The Purge) running a devious rehab scam.
Body Brokers stars Jack Kilmer (Lords of Chaos & Palo Alto) and Alice Englert (Beautiful Creatures) as Utah and Opal, two drug addicts living on the streets of rural Ohio when a man named Wood (Michael K. Williams) befriends them and offers to bring them to Los Angeles to a rehab facility. Utah appears to become sober with the help of a therapist (Melissa Leo), and he soon falls in love with a former addict (Jessica Rothe) who now works as a tech at the treatment center. However, Utah eventually finds out that the facility is actually just a cover for a predatory business which makes addicts recruit other addicts.
Not only is the story fascinating, but Swab himself went through something similar: “I was a street junky for over a decade. During my early attempts at recovery, I went through countless rehabs and detoxes all over the country. In that time, I was ‘brokered’ and then taught how to broker bodies. This is the true story of the multi-billion dollar insurance scandal within the substance abuse treatment industry.” Vertical Entertainment will release Body Brokers in theaters and on VOD on Feb. 19th, 2021.
