Horror movies are no match to the ominous uncertainty of the coronavirus pandemic. Universal and Blumhouse Productions announced a slew of horror projects whose key release dates in the theatrical release calendar have been changed amid the pandemic.
The Forever Purge, which had expected a July 2020 release in theaters, is being pushed back a whole year. It will instead hit theaters on July 9, 2021.
David Gordon Green-directed Halloween Kills, the upcoming sequel to blockbuster Halloween (2018), is also delayed a whole year, from October 16, 2020 to October 15, 2021. The last Halloween became the highest grossing title in the 42-year old franchise with $255.5M worldwide.
Halloween Ends, the third sequel in the revived franchise from Miramax, Blumhouse and Trancas International Films, is likewise seeing its release being pushed back a year like its predecessor, from Oct. 15, 2021 to Oct. 14, 2022.
Meanwhile, Universal, MGM, and Jordan Peele-produced upcoming horror project Candyman by Nia DaCosta will take over Halloween Kills’ former spot of Oct. 16, 2020, moving from Sept. 25. Searchlight’s limited release of Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch will also hit the big screen that day.
On Thursday, Halloween creator Carpenter and Gordon Green attached a new footage of Halloween Kills on Twitter as well as the news that film would be delayed, but would be screened in IMAX when it opens again. The teaser picks up where the last Halloween film left off.
