Deadline reports potentially intriguing new film in the works which may be headlined by Bill Murray. The project is The King of Counterfeit, which looks to be directed by John McNaughton (Wild Things) from a screenplay by James Sclafani. If plans comes together, the film will star Murray as well as Linda Cardellini (Avengers: Age of Ultron) and Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games). Lotus Entertainment is aboard the upcoming project and will oversee sales on the forthcoming Cannes Film Festival market.
The King of Counterfeit revolves around two young lovebirds (presumably to be played by Cardellini and Hutcherson) who make their mark as budding counterfeiters. Under the tutelage of corrupt lawyer, their riches grow but they find themselves on the hunt from a frightening con man threatened by their success. It appears to be unclear at this time which role Murray may be up for.
Murray and McNaughton previously collaborated on the well-received 1993 comedy crime film Mad Dog & Glory, a film in which Murray received a runner-up slot from the New York Film Critics Circle that year. The actor’s stock in both comedy and drama has only become more fleshed out over the years following successful roles under eclectic filmmakers like Wes Anderson and Sofia Coppola. Murray received an Oscar nod for his performance in Coppola’s 2003 film Lost in Translation.
Currently, Murray’s voice work is on display in Disney’s hugely successful The Jungle Book and he will cameo in the upcoming girl-powered Ghostbusters reboot. He is also believed to be voicing part in Wes Anderson’s upcoming and still untitled stop-motion feature.
