Bill Condon Set to Direct ‘Guys and Dolls’ Adaptation at Tristar

Bill Condon is set to direct the highly-anticipated remake of the musical Guys And Dolls for TriStar pictures. Condon is known for co-writing the films Chicago and The Greatest Showman, as well as directing Dreamgirls. TriStar purchased remake rights to the original Damon Runyon short stories in March of 2019, as well as the rights to the Broadway musical with its book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows and its music by Frank Loesser. According to Deadline, John Goldwyn and Marc Toberoff are producing, while Nicole Brown and Shary Shirazi are overseeing for the studio.

Guys and Dolls first premiered on Broadway in 1950. It was extremely successful, running for over 1,200 performances, as well as winnning the Tony Award for Best Musical. The musical has had many Broadway and London revivals, as well as an equally successful 1955 film adaptation. The film had a star-studded cast, including Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons, Frank Sinatra, and Vivian Blaine. There was then another revival in 1992, starring Nathan Lane and Faith Prince. The film was nominated for 7 Tony Awards, winning 3 including Best Direction for a Musical and Best Performance by a Leading Actress.

A Guys and Dolls reboot has been in talks for years, most recently with 20th Century getting the rights and hoping that Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt would potray in the roles of Brando and Sinatra.

Melissa Cusano: I love to escape reality with reading, writing, movies, and music! If I'm not working I love to go to concerts (pre-covid), play video games, and hang out with my dog Ozzi.
