Sundance is a place where new, creative minds have the ability to show off their work. Many times, experimental films are shown at the festivals to allow filmmakers to explore new ideas and film techniques. Big Beach, who are Sundance mainstays and have provided us with memorable films like Little Miss Sunshine and Safety Not Guaranteed, have made their first venture into animation with White Fang, an adaptation of the classic Jack London novel. Deadline was the first to report about the showing and have received a small clip to give an idea of the animation style and tone of the film:
White Fang looks to follow the same story as the book with the main character being a wild wolfdog. The story will follow its domestication into a sleigh dog pack during the Klondike Gold Rush and will supposedly tackle some of the themes from the book. Because it is a children’s film, it is possible that the adapters took some liberties while adapting the book, which will obviously lower the violence and other harsher themes discussed.
French company Superpod and Luxembourg company Bidibul were the groups to take on the adaptation. Alexandre Espigares, who won an Academy Award for his work on the animated short Mr. Hublot, took the reins on directing. The film does not have a release date as of yet, but the Big Beach executives believe that the film could thrive with a limited release because of the popularity of the book.
