The Film & Television tax credit Program of California has revealed 23 new movies, 10 of which are studio movies and 13 of them being indies, to shoot in the state this year and into the next. Top projects include the director of Dallas Buyers Club Jean-Marc Vallée’s untitled John Lennon & Yoko Ono feature (Universal), Zack Snyder’s sci-fi adventure Rebel Moon (Netflix), and the Jerry Bruckheimer produced Beverly Hills Cop 4 (also Netflix).
The iconic Eddie Murphy-led franchise, which began in 1984, began its reboot from a one-time licensing deal between Netflix and Paramount and is set to spend $78 million over the course of 58 filming days. The 23 projects are expected to generate a grand total of $678 million. “We look forward to welcoming this diverse blend of films and filmmakers to the tax credit program,” California Film Commission executive director Colleen Bell said, via reporting of The Hollywood Reporter.
Other studio pictures to shoot in the state include untitled projects from Aziz Ansari, Karyn Kusama, and Kobi Libii. The creator of the hit ABC show Blackish Kenya Barris has an untitled Jonah Hill project set to shoot in California as well. The latest movie projects will hire an estimated 4,088 crew, 873 cast, and 40,621 background actors and stand-ins for a combined 953 filming days. We’ll see if this boost in new jobs within the industry will translate into big box office results, as the desire for new content as well as giving people what they want post-quarantine is at its peak.
