Benicio Del Toro to Star in Oliver Stone’s ‘White Lies’

Benicio Del Toro (Sicario, Traffic) has been cast as the lead of Oliver Stone’s upcoming film White Lies. This marks the second collaboration between the actor and director since 2012’s Savages, but unlike that film and the majority of Stone’s work, this project feels low-key by comparison. Rather than Stone’s usual focus on high-profile political narratives like Platoon and Nixon, White Lies is a rather intimate exploration of family conflict and rediscovering love.

Based on the synopsis from Variety, White Lies stars Del Toro as a man currently repeating his divorced parents’ mistakes in his interactions with his own wife and son. Trapped by this conflict, he embarks on a lust-filled journey in the hope of freeing himself, only to become even more lost in the process. However, upon meeting a woman whose life is the opposite of his own, Del Toro’s character begins a journey of rediscovery. The film is currently scheduled to begin production in New York next spring.

If anything, the fact that Oliver Stone is making a film so drastically different from his usual body of work feels refreshing. His most recent project, the four-part TV series The Putin Interviews, aired on Showtime in June 2017. Del Toro’s 2018 work includes Sicario: Day of the Soldado and Avengers: Infinity War, as well as the upcoming Showtime series Escape at Dannemora, directed by Ben Stiller.
