Evangeline Lilly Takes the Sting Out of a ‘Wasp’ Solo Marvel Movie

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has attempted to stay true to each character pulled from its comic book pages and plastered on the big screen. With this in mind, Ant-Man and the Wasp actress Evangeline Lilly admits that she is against the idea of solo Wasp film. Lilly emphasizes that she does not think a solo movie featuring Hope Van Dyne/Wasp (her character from Ant-Man) is the best thing for the franchise. According to Screen Rant, Lilly expresses that splitting the two heroes (Ant-Man and the Wasp) up would be an insult to the comic book characters and would betray the Wasp’s origins, as the two have always been a team and this pairing has been key to her portrayal of the character.

At the Boston Fan Expo, Lilly stated that while Ant-Man and the Wasp have consistently teamed up in the comics, the dynamic between the two characters on film also has a particular chemistry that fans enjoy. Without Ant-Man to add to the pair’s delightful banter, the solo film would suffer greatly from the loss.

Though Lilly has voiced that a solo Wasp film is a bad idea, Screen Rant confirms that she expresses interest in playing the Wasp in another project. The possibility of an all-female MCU film would give Lilly enough wing-span to fly without her buggy counterpart. With the introduction of Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel, possible solo Black Widow film in 2020, and a plethora of other commanding and exciting female characters already within the MCU, the possibilities are endless. A female take on the Avengers could be just the ticket to take MCU into Phase Five of Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige’s master plan.

Although Wasp has proven to be a leader of her own right, Larson’s Captain Marvel will be the most powerful character the MCU has seen to date, and she’s the best candidate to lead a female band of superheroes. Since she is a Captain in the Air Force (hence the name), she is already gifted with the ability and experience to lead. Moreover, she has the strength, grace, and personality to lead in a way that even Captain America could not match.

With many of the actresses in the MCU (including Lilly) pushing Kevin Feige to make a female team-up film, the idea is being considered, but it has yet to be confirmed in any official capacity. That said, following the massive success of DC’s Wonder Woman, and with future female film Gotham City’s Sirens still a possibility, the MCU could benefit from a film based on the strong characters within their shared universe.

Ant-Man and the Wasp is currently in theaters, and Captain Marvel is set to hit the big screen March 8, 2019.
