This weekend in the domestic box office was busy as Baz Luhrmann’s new biopic Elvis joined the party at the top of the list. In the film’s opening weekend, Elvis accumulated $30.5 million, barely knocking Top Gun: Maverick from the top spot. The Tom Cruise film just lost its spot to Elvis by a mere $2 million dollars.
On the international front, Top Gun: Maverick smashed through the $1 billion marker, making it the second film since the pandemic to do so and the most successful film for Tom Cruise in his career.
Meanwhile the frontrunner for the last two weekends, Jurasssic World Dominion, is officially in number three spot with $26.4 million. Following are Ethan Hawke’s new horror film The Black Phone with $23.3 million and Disney’s Lightyear at $17.7 million.
This was Black Phone‘s opening weekend but with its fourth place spot it did not garner the same success as Elvis did in the same situation. To the film’s credit, going into theaters at a time like this with four other big blockbusters on the marquee is difficult for any film, and it’s considered a success by any means that the film garnered over $20 million on an opening weekend. Especially a film that lacks the ticket boost Austin Butler provides thanks to his current appreciation on social media right now.
