Jay Basu has signed on to rewrite the screenplay for Universal’s upcoming remake of 1970s TV series Battlestar Galactica. The cult classic sci-fi show was remade as a series for Syfy in 2013, but will now be brought to the big screen.
Battlestar Galactica is set in a world where humans live on numerous planets at war with a violent robot race called the Cylons. It has multiple spin-off comic series, books, and video games with a lasting fan presence. A film revival is the next logical step as sci-fi films like Star Wars continue to bring large audiences to theaters.
Basu will be reworking the script previously written by Westworld writer Lisa Joy. He has experience with reboots and sequels, as he wrote the recently released Girl in the Spider’s Web, worked on the upcoming reboot of Charlie’s Angels, and is planned to write the remake of Labyrinth. He will be working with director Francis Lawrence (Red Sparrow, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire) and producers Dylan Clark (Oblivion, Planet of the Apes) and Michael De Luca (Fifty Shades of Grey, The Social Network).
Limited details about the plot and how it will differ from the original series have been released, but the film looks to be moving full steam ahead.
