The relocation of the BAFTAs to Royal Albert Hall didn’t defuse the excitement of the Brits prime awards show. With Stephen Fry as host, it proved to be a entertaining ceremony, as well as one with both expected and unexpected winners. As would be anticipated, the Brits showed a lot of love to their own, recognizing British films that have failed to rack up awards this season thus far. But the number of American winners of BAFTAs were still impressive.
As far as surprises (but expected for the BAFTAs), Lion finally received some recognition, pulling in the awards for Best Supporting Actor (Dev Patel) and Best Adapted Screenplay. Fantastic Beasts won Best Production Design, while Florence Foster Jenkins got some love with a win for Best Makeup & Hair.
Along with surprises, there were also some wins for awards season favorites. La La Land took home five awards for Best Film, Best Director (Damien Chazelle), Best Cinematography, Best Actress (Emma Stone), and Best Original Music, while Manchester by the Sea also did quite well with Best Actor (Casey Affleck) and Best Original Screenplay.
Other surprising, but nonetheless deserving winners included Kubo and the Two Strings for Best Animated Film, Jackie for Best Costume Design, and Hacksaw Ridge for Best Editing. The Hungarian film Son of Saul was also a surprise for Best Non-English Film, given the film made the awards rounds last year, and managed to sneak into the BAFTAs for this year’s competition.
For the strictly British section of awards, 80-year old Ken Loach took home the award for Outstanding British Film in 2017 for his drama I, Daniel Blake (and gave an anticipated politically charged acceptance speech that most Brits anticipated and awaited). His film won the Palm d’Or at Cannes last year. Meanwhile, newcomer British-Iranian writer/director Babak Anvari received Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer for his feature film Under the Shadow, a film set in post-revolution and war-torn 1980s Tehran, Iran.
