BAFTA Nominations Announced

Nominations have been unveiled for the 68th annual British Academy of Film Awards (BAFTA). It was strong day for both Bridge of Spies and Carol, as both films led the pack with nine nominations apiece. Carol, especially, rebounded quite nicely after few painful snubs this past week including missing out at the Producers Guild Awards. Awards mainstays The Big ShortThe Revenant and Spotlight rounded out the Best Film category. The Big Short especially showed strength in earning nods for Best Director (Adam McKay) and Best Supporting Actor (Christian Bale).

However, the Brits held some national pride with nominations for Julie Walters (for Brooklyn) and Maggie Smith (for The Lady in the Van); strangely Charlotte Rampling (who won the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and National Society of Film Critics prizes) was missing for her acclaimed work in 45 Years. Last year, BAFTA gave Richard Linklater’s Boyhood the top prize. The 68th BAFTA Awards will take place in London on February 14th.
