Bad Bunny Confirms His Departure From ‘El Muerto’

After so much time in production limbo, Vanity Fair confirms that the planned Marvel film El Muerto has been removed from the release calendar, much to the dismay of its lead star, Bad Bunny. When asked about his departure, Bunny was notably evasive about its shelving, citing complicated feelings.

Accompanied by his publicist Sujeylee Solá, Bad Bunny recounted his career as a rapper and a WWE star, even reflecting on the roles he has done. However, Bunny admitted that he did not know what to say about the El Muerto matter, and Solá insisted that the interview move on from the question. The only concrete thing that Bad Bunny has said is that the issue is a “delicate” matter, with Solá confirming that the role is off the table.

Despite all of this, Bad Bunny has held his head high and is looking for other outlets for his creative expression. Surprisingly enough, he has stated that he is not a fan of action films and would prefer to do something with “a little bit more drama, romance too, or comedy,” even expressing his desire to possibly do a historical picture with some action sprinkled in.

Set to be released in January 2024, El Muerto would have followed the titular Marvel antihero luchador in the same universe as Morbius and Venom. According to Sony Pictures, Bad Bunny’s casting came from his positive reception as the Wolf in the 2022 action comedy Bullet Train. Jonás Cuarón was also slated to direct in a press release in CinemaCon 2022.

El Muerto was pulled from release because of the ongoing strikes, but that does not mean the film has been fully canceled. With Bad Bunny no longer set to star, Sony is looking for a new star to play the lead character. Even so, the film has no new release date.
