Awkwafina, fresh off starring role in Ocean’s 8, along with Tzi Ma (Amazon’s The Man in the High Castle) and Diana Lin, will be starring in writer-director Lulu Wang’s currently untitled family drama. Wang also directed the 2014 film Posthumous.
The movie follows the story of a Chinese family who decide to surprise their grandmother with an impromptu wedding before she dies. The plot also focuses on the story of one of the granddaughters, who feels unwelcome in the country she should be able to call home. Filming begins this summer in New York and China.
Big Beach’s Marc Turtletaub, Peter Saraf, and Dani Melia will produce alongside Depth of Field, Seesaw, and Kindred Spirit.
Awkwafina stars in Crazy Rich Asians, which opens August 17. You can also catch her in theaters now in Ocean’s 8.
