2020 is already proving itself as a historical year for film, with Awkwafina becoming the first ever Asian-American woman to win the Best Actress at the Golden Globes for her performance in The Farewell. The Sunday night ceremony also saw Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite take home best foreign film, the first South Korean film ever to do so.
The 77th annual ceremony, which many view as a precursor to the Academy Awards, gave its big prize of Best Picture to Sam Mendes’s 1917 for drama and Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood for comedy/musical. Joaquin Phoenix and Renée Zellweger nabbed Best Actor and Actress in a drama for their respective roles in Joker and Judy, while Taron Egerton joined Awkwafina in winning best actor in a comedy/musical for his performance as Elton John in Rocketman. Supporting Actor and Actress awards went to Brad Pitt and Laura Dern for Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood and Marriage Story, respectively.
