In the past few weeks, Marvel has been at the top of its game. Their film, Black Panther, has seemingly revitalized the superhero exhaustion that inundates their audiences, breaking records and reaching over a billion dollars in earnings worldwide. Now seems like a perfect time for the company to unveil their latest trailer, especially considering how much fans want more of the characters introduced in Black Panther. Considering the sheer number of cast members in the film, reports say that the movie will provide new scenes of at least some of the characters, such as T’challa’s talented inventor little sister (and fan-favorite), Shuri, and Dora Milaje member Okoye. Now, the trailer has officially confirmed both of their appearances, showing T’Challa as well.
As of yet, one of the only superhero films Black Panther has yet to steamroll through the profits of is the original Avengers film, which grossed 1.518 billion dollars at the box office. Though Black Panther could still earn those numbers, it will be interesting to see if Marvel can again place in the top ten highest-grossing films of all time, which they also managed with the first Avengers film and the less critically-beloved Avengers: Age of Ultron.
The trailer does good work to link itself to the previous Avengers films, which have spent years laying down the groundwork for their villain, Thanos. The movies have continued to weave in the infinity stones, which power his gauntlet, placing them as central items in films like Thor: The Dark World, The Guardians of the Galaxy, and Avengers: Age of Ultron. Now, all of these elements have come together for Thanos’ evil master plan: destroying half of the population to achieve “the perfect balance.”
With its chilling new intro, spoken by Zoe Saldana’s character Gamora, assassin and former daughter of Thanos, the audience learns quite possibly the most substantial information about the villain in the MCU, as she says that “the entire time [she] knew him, he only one goal: to wipe out of half of the universe. If he gets all of the infinity stones, he can do it with a snap of his fingers. Just like that.”
To counter this awful plan, Tony Stark tries to lead the characters to hold on to the stones and wait for Thanos to come to them, setting the stage for the vibrant action of the trailer, which culminates with a tense punch between Captain America and Thanos.
Amidst the shots of the many, many characters in the movie, the trailer also involves plenty humorous moments, such as Star-Lord protesting Stark’s plan and Peter Parker introducing himself to Dr. Strange. Overall, the trailer strikes a great balance between humor, action, exposition, and of course the giant amount of characters.
