Avengers: Endgame breaks another record this weekend. Saturday afternoon at San Diego’s annual Comic-Con, president of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige announced that the film has become the highest earning film at the box office, according to The Hollywood Reporter. This position was previously held by James Cameron’s Avatar, which generated $2.788 billion during its run. Cameron also directed Titanic, which currently ranks as the third highest grossing film to date. Endgame now holds the title for the top spot with total of $2.8 billion in earnings worldwide, thus closing the $500,000 gap it had behind Avatar on Friday.
Marvel’s strategy to re-release Endgame in theaters helped the film achieve this feat. The film was already on track for a successful run with the biggest debut of any film making $1.22 billion during its opening. Disney Studios co-chairman and chief creative officer Alan Horn commented on this milestone: “A huge congratulations to the Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios teams, and thank you to the fans around the world who lifted Avengers: Endgame to these historic heights.”
Marvel dominated Hall H at Comic-Con this year. The panel began with a montage of the classic Avengers with a strong emphasis on Tony Stark and his speech from the end of Endgame. After the nostalgia of the past Marvel films came the plans for the future, including The Eternals, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Black Widow, Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness, Blade, and more. Before we know it, Marvel could be breaking their own records as they continue to expand their cinematic universe.
