This year at San Diego Comic Con several reboots and sequels were announced. But probably the strangest franchise to receive the reboot treatment is none other than Attack of the Killer Tomatoes. According to Movieweb production has already begun on the Attack of the Killer Tomatoes reboot. The movie will be directed by Dustin Ferguson, who is a prolific B-Movie director.
Ferguson is a fitting director for the reboot since the original 1978 movie that kicked off the entire franchise was supposed to be a parody of B-Movies. The movie was a dark comedy directed by John DeBello and was about a group of scientists trying to save the world from the titular killer tomatoes.
Despite the fact that the original Attack of the Killer Tomatoes received a lot of negative criticism, it was able to launch a franchise of sorts which includes several movie sequels such as 1988’s Return of the Killer Tomatoes! which starred George Clooney, 1990’s Killer Tomatoes Strike Back! and 1991’s Killer Tomatoes Eat France! as well as a couple of spinoff video games and even a spinoff children’s cartoon. Return of the Killer Tomatoes!
It is not really a surprise to learn that Attack of the Killer Tomatoes is finally getting a reboot since studios have been eyeing it for years, and there were even rumors in 2005 suggesting that Adam Sandler would be involved in the remake. Right now it is unknown when the Attack of the Killer Tomatoes movie will be coming out, but we do know that it definitely is being made.
