Disney has been shifting a lot of their 2020 plans due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They announced today that many of their films previously put on hold, including Black Widow and Mulan, have received new release dates for the time being. Some Disney fans, however have been curious about one film that wasn’t delayed, which just so happens to be an adaptation of the popular fantasy novel Artemis Fowl. The film will now be released straight to Disney Plus, rather than receive a theatrical release.
The film was initially set for a May 29th theatrical release date, but its cancellation is most definitely due to the coronavirus pandemic closing theaters all across the globe. With Artemis Fowl not being as highly anticipated as Mulan or Black Widow, Disney felt streaming would be a better option for the Kenneth Branagh0directed film. For the time being the film will still keep its May 29th release date, but on Disney+ instead.
President of Content and Marketing at Disney+, Ricky Strauss, made the announcement of Artemis Fowl being on the service and stated that “With audiences largely unable to attend theaters in the current environment, we are thrilled to offer the premiere of ‘Artemis Fowl’ on Disney Plus.” Strauss also commented that the film would be a perfect addition to Disney+’ summer lineup, bringing a vibrant fantasy world from Branagh and crew that longtime fans have waited to see in live-action for years.
Artemis Fowl is set for release on May 29th, 2020.
