Ariana DeBose Makes History as the First Openly Queer Actor of Color to Win First Oscar

Ariana DeBose, the first Afro Latina and openly queer woman of color to receive her first Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her work as Anita in Spielberg’s remake of West Side Story.

DeBose and legendary performer Rita Moreno, who originated the role in the 1961 film adaptation of the popular Broadway musical, have joined a select club of actors who have won an Academy Award for playing the same character.

Moreno made history as the first Latina to win an Oscar for her role as Anita 60 years ago.
