Ari Aster Follows Up ‘Beau Is Afraid’ With New Western ‘Eddington’ Starring Joaquin Phoenix

While Ari Aster’s feature film debut Hereditary and sophomore film Midsommar were considered critical successes, his most recently released film Beau Is Afraid did not fare well at the box office (although, it should be noted that the film was certainly able to impress critics). What’s next for the filmmaker at the box office is uncertain, but Aster’s latest project, Eddington, is sure to receive plenty of attention as it features an all-star cast and is a sure sign that Aster hasn’t lost any of his creative momentum.

Eddington’s cast features a protagonist played by Joaquin Phoenix (who also collaborated with Aster as the protagonist in Beau Is Afraid) along with other big names, such as Austin Butler, Luke Grimes, Pedro Pascal, and Emma Stone. It has not been disclosed what roles these stars will play in the film as much about the project is still unknown.

Currently, all that is known is that Eddington will focus on a “Small-town New Mexico sheriff with higher aspirations.” The film is a Western, which will be the director’s first try in the genre. In line with Aster’s earlier projects, A24 will be producing Eddington.
