Anna Foerster Hired by J.J. Abrams to Direct Thriller ‘Lou’

It was reported on Wednesday that Anna Foerster has been hired by J.J. Abrams, on behalf of his production company Bad Robot and Paramount Pictures, to direct the upcoming dramatic thriller Lou. Mashable was the first to report this story.

Lou follows a young mother who teams up with a mysterious older woman to help recover her abducted child. The script, which was written by Maggie McGowan Cohn, follows an elderly woman who lives on a remote island as she helps a young woman on the island rescue her daughter, after the young woman’s ex kidnaps the daughter and escapes into the woods. The screenplay was on the 2015 Black List, Hollywood’s annual list of unproduced screenplays.

Foerster’s directorial debut Underworld: Blood Wars starring Kate Beckinsale came out this Thanksgiving, but she is not newcomer. In 2013, she was director of photography for White House Down starring Jamie Foxx and Channing Tatum. She has also directed episodes of Outlander and Criminal Minds, as well as served as second unit director/cinematographer for The Day After Tomorrow and 10,000 BC, along with many other credits. She is also reportedly attached to direct sequel to the 2011 film Source Code starring Jake Gyllenhaal.

Abrams appointment of Foerster is significant given the current outcry for more female directors, especially the recent conflict over Star Wars not casting a female director. The fact the script was written by a female also is a good sign for furthermost of female voices in Hollywood, especially in genres typically dominated by men.

The film has no release date yet. Stay tuned for more details.
