Amidst a lack of big releases, AMC has decided to offer a new way for moviegoers to see films in theaters. Starting at $99, customers can get an entire theater to themselves for their own private screening.
The “Private Movie Showing” program’s base rate of $99 allows an individual, or a party of up to 20 people, to see older films. To see new releases, the price goes up to at least $149.
The current selection of films in the program include Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, the Liam Neeson-led action thriller Honest Thief, and the final film in the X-Men film series, The New Mutants. Some of the older films available include, Jurassic Park, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Shrek.
At an additional cost, the host of a private screening has the option to use a microphone to emcee their event. And in order to bring heated food into a screening, there’s a $250 catering fee.
AMC’s new program comes after Alamo Drafthouse and Cinemark began their own similar private screening programs. Currently, AMC’s private screening program has the cheapest starting price
The recent wave of blockbuster delays has caused theater chains to struggle even more during the COVID-19 pandemic. Recent news suggested that AMC may run out of money by the end of 2020, or at least by early 2021.
