Amazon Studios Wins ‘Brittany Runs a Marathon’ at Sundance

At Sundance, Amazon has been making some major acquisitions to expand their film catalogue. Their most recent addition is Brittany Runs Marathon, which Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke nabbed for $14 million.

The film’s lead Jillian Bell is known for her comedic side with memorable roles in 22 Jump Street and Rough Night. But this foray into drama has proven that she is a versatile talent. The film follows Brittany (Bell) as she trains for a marathon after her doctor tells her that she needs to turn over a new leaf and live a healthier lifestyle.

According to Bell, the film tackles body image in a sensitive, smart way. As someone who has struggled with anxiety about weight, Bell says that the film takes an important stance in not equating beauty with health or happiness with thinness.

The cast of the film also includes Utkarsh Ambudkar, Lil Rel Howery, Michaela Watkins, Micah Stock, Mikey Day, and Alice Lee. So far the film has met positive reviews from Sundance audiences and has charmed critics with its balance of humor and heart.

Amazon Studios is still hard at work in Sundance working on picking up their favorite titles. The festival runs until February 3, so we’ll see what other big deals are closed in the next few days.
