Amazon Studios is reportedly near completing deal where it will finance, produce and distribute Wonderstruck, the latest from writer-director Todd Haynes (Carol), according to The Wrap.
The film, which reunites Haynes with his Far From Heaven star Julianne Moore (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2), centers around the intertwined lives of two deaf children, Ben and Rose. Ben, who lives in 1977 Minnesota, receives a note sending him to New York after his mother dies. Rose, who is locked in a 1927 New Jersey house, also escapes to New York, but to see her idol Lillian Mayhew. The movie is an adaptation of the novel by Brian Selznick (The Invention of Hugo Cabret).
Amazon is slowly building itself as a being a director-friendly studio. The studio recently released Spike Lee’s Chiraq and acquired the rights to Nicolas Winding Refn’s The Neon Demon. Alongside working with directors, the studio also has number of potential prestige projects including Elvis & Nixon as well as the satire Desired Moments.
Wonderstruck is likely to get plenty of attention leading up to its release with Haynes’ latest, Carol, getting plenty of awards attention and Moore coming off her Oscar win for Still Alice. Throw in the fact that this marks a reunion for the director and actress and this will definitely have plenty of awards hype upon release.
