Alice Sebold Memoir Adaptation ‘Lucky’ Starring ‘You’ Star Victoria Pedretti Loses Financing

Variety has exclusively learned that production of Alice Sebold’s 1999 memoir Lucky which You star Victoria Pedretti was starring in, has officially been dropped.

Sebold recalls being violently assaulted and raped by a stranger during her freshman year at Syracuse University in 1981 in Lucky and explores how this experience influenced the rest of her life.

According to a source close to the project, the film was canceled when it lost funding months ago. Pedretti is also no longer a part of the project.

A New York Times report published on November 23, which highlighted how executive producer Timothy Mucciante expressed reservations about the events in the book and departed the production. Mucciante supplied the film’s money through his company Red Badge Films.

Anthony Broadwater, the man, portrayed in Sebold’s novel under the fictional name of Gregory Madison, was convicted of first-degree rape and five other offenses; in this case, he was exonerated on November 24 in New York State Supreme Court. Broadwater was freed in 1998 after serving 16 years in jail. He has maintained his innocence ever since, despite decades of humiliation, isolation, and missed career prospects as a registered sex offender.

In June, Mucciante departed the project and hired a private investigator to look into the evidence against Broadwater. Broadwater’s legal team then pursued the findings in private inquiry. Mucciante was instrumental in having Broadwater’s conviction overturned.

Cassandra Reichelt: I graduated from California State University of Long Beach in Spring 2021 with a degree in Journalism major. I did attend Long Beach City College for a couple of years, I then transferred to CSULB in 2019. I want to write something outside the normal, something no one would think to write about in a unique way. It also shows how far I am willing to go to produce something amazing that will get more readers interested in the world of Journalism. I am on my way to making a professional life for myself.
