Author Stephen King is one of the best known and most prolific modern horror writers. Throughout his life King’s novels and short stories have been adapted into film and television. Some of the best known adaptations of his work include Carrie which Brian De Palma directed, The Shining which Stanley Kubrick directed, Pet Sematary, Children of the Corn, Cujo, Misery, the recent It movies, and the list could go on.
However one of King’s earliest works, The Long Walk, has never been adapted into a movie. The Long Walk is a dystopian horror novel that King started writing years before he published Carrie. The plot of the book revolves around an annual deadly walking contest that a hundred boys participate in hopes of winning the prize of “anything the winner wants for the rest of their life.”
According to Screen Rant New Line Cinema is working on getting The Long Walk adapted into a movie, and despite setbacks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic the project will be moving forward. Norwegian director André Øvredal is supposed to direct this movie, and the movie’s script was written by James Vanderbilt. Øvredal previously directed Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, and he is also going to direct its sequel as well.
While we do not know when The Long Walk will be released or even when its production will begin, we at least know that the project is still alive and still going forward at a decent walking pace.
