Having dominated the 2019 Oscars and bringing unprecedented popularity into the foreign film market with his film Parasite, acclaimed South Korean director Bong Joon-Ho has partnered up with distributor NEON to release Memories Of Murder nationwide. The now 17-year old film will play across the United States exclusively on October 19th and October 20th.
The movie chronicles the grim true story of three detectives played by Joon-Ho’s long-time collaborators Song Kang-ho, Sang-kyung Kim, and Roe-ha Kim as they struggle to catch serial rapist and murderer that terrorized a small South Korean province between 1986 and 1991. The movie was incredibly well-received by both the public and critics upon its first release and is often compared to David Fincher’s Zodiac, which can be encouraging for movie-goers that are not familiar with the Academy Award-winning director and enjoy thrilling crime stories.
While talking to the press Joon-Ho explained that one of his major goals was to set a “realistic atmosphere” through which he could express “The memory of murder; for the detectives, the memory of not catching the killer; for the people around the victims, the nightmarish memory of losing their loved ones; for the people who lived through those times, the memory of how we lived…”
So, if you wish to be one of the lucky few that gets to see it in theaters, the tickets for the limited showing are now being sold through Fathom Events. Regardless, this is a movie that should be on everyone’s radars.
