It seems like the Oscars have always been surrounded by controversy. This year the Academy was heavily criticized for considering to not air all the awards on television. More controversy arose when the Academy considered excluding movies streamed on online platforms like Netflix.
Now the Academy has just released a new set of rules for the 92nd Oscars. The full list of rules can be found here. Major changes to the rules include the Foreign Language Film category being renamed to International Feature Film, and the category has been expanded to allow 10 nominations. The Makeup and Hairstyling category has also been expanded to allow for five nominations and the shortlist has increased from seven to ten. The Short Film categories and the Animated and Live Action Short Films can also now qualify for eligibility by being shown theatrically in either New York City or Los Angeles County.
The Academy will be upholding the rule that states that in order for a film to be eligible it must have a seven-day theatrical run in a Los Angeles County theater, and have at least three paid admission showings a day. If a movie meets these conditions it can still qualify if it has a non-theatrical release on the day of or on the day after its Los Angeles theatrical release. This means that Netflix movies and other online movies are still eligible for nominations and possibly wins.
