To begin the new year, popular indie film distributor A24 just released an official trailer for the upcoming film First Cow, directed by Kelly Reichardt and starring John Magaro alongside Orion Lee and Toby Jones.
Based on Jonathan Raymond’s 2004 novel The Half Life, First Cow is set in the Oregon Trail during the 19th century. The film portrays an emotionally resonating story of an unexpected, wholesome bond between two men – a cook named Cookie (Magaro) and a Chinese immigrant named King Lu (Lee) – and how they rely on a prized cow’s milk to keep their small business of selling biscuits and treats afloat. Accompanied by an inspiring soundtrack scored by William Tyler, the trailer depicts a montage of the characters’ heartwarming, optimistic conversations, the simple lifestyle on the Western frontier, and most importantly, the furry and gentle domesticated creature.
Reichardt’s filmmaking trademarks include minimalist styles and emphasis on landscapes and intimacy, all of which are reflected in First Cow‘s trailer. The film seems to highlight themes of a historical, opportunistic mentality known as the American Dream. Reichardt won a Toronto Film Critics Association Award for Best Film in her previous 2008 film Wendy and Lucy.
“First Cow” is expected to hit theaters on March 6, 2020. Take a look at the trailer below.
