As the box office marches on, one of the biggest hits of the year thus far continues to bring in a hefty profit. The latest film from A24, Backrooms, has set yet another record for the company as its domestic total soars past $100 million. Based on the internet phenomenon, Backrooms sees 20-year-old director Kane Parsons blend horror with liminal space.
After the owner of a furniture store mysteriously disappears without a trace, his therapist begins to search for him, only to discover that he’s found himself in a bizarre plane of existence, with rooms that seem to stretch on for an eternity. Even before it hit theaters last weekend, Backrooms had already managed to generate a lot of buzz. The presence on the internet certainly helped, alongside the analog horror series on YouTube that Parsons himself created.
To say A24 had a hit on their hands would be putting it lightly, as the film has now managed to become their best-performing film when counting domestic totals. The Hollywood Reporter noted that by Wednesday, Backrooms had managed to surpass a stateside $100 million total, which puts it above previous record holder Marty Supreme. Hollywood Reporter also noted that this comes very shortly after Backrooms settled in as being the best opening the company has seen for a film.
