A24 Brings YouTube Sensation Marcel the Shell to the Big Screen in an Official Trailer

Marcel the Shell is a small shell with a lot to say, and he is finally coming to the big screen. A24 has released an official trailer for Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, one of the studio’s upcoming features which stars the titular shell and is set to release in theaters this summer.

From the minds of Dean Fleischer-Camp and Jenny Slate on YouTube, Marcel the Shell began as a series of YouTube shorts following Slate as Marcel, a small shell who tells the audience anything and everything about his minuscule life, his family, and his pet lint, Alan. The film will follow this motley crew with Slate reprising her role as Marcel alongside Isabella Rossellini, who is set to play Marcel’s grandmother, Connie. Deadline reports that the film will focus on the two shells as they navigate life “as the sole survivors of a mysterious tragedy” (Deadline). The film will then follow Marcel’s rise to fame when an independent filmmaker stays in the Airbnb he inhabits and decides to make a short film about Marcel, bringing in millions of fans.

Rosa Salazar, Thomas Mann, and Lesley Stahl also star in the film, with Fleischer-Camp directing from a script written by himself, Slate, and Nick Paley. Camp, Slate, and Elisabeth Holm produced the film with Andrew Goldman, Caroline Kaplan, Paul Mezey, and Terry Leonard. Philipp Engelhorn, William Byerly, Nion McEvoy, George Rush, and Michael Raisler are on board as executive producers. The film recently premiered at SXSW Film Festival.

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On releases in theaters on June 24.
