A Third ‘Coming to America’ Movie Is Being Planned

Coming 2 America, the sequel to the 1988 movie Coming to America, has been out for less than a week, but there are already plans for a sequel. Movie Web reported that Eddie Murphy has already mentioned that he has some plans to make a third Coming to America movie.

Coming 2 America was released on March 4th directly on to Amazon’s streaming service platform. Since its digital release, Coming 2 America has been successful with earnings and viewership according to Deadline. However the movie has received a rather mixed critical reception.

While Murphy has mentioned that he does have an idea for the third Coming to America, he has said the he does not have any immediate plans to make the sequel. Murphy says he needs to wait till he reaches old age before he can go forward with the third movie. Perhaps he is interested in making the third movie with a similar time gap as the first two, so don’t expect to see a third movie for a long time.

The original Coming to America was already a sort of spiritual sequel to the 1983 movie Trading Places, which also starred Murphy along with fellow SNL alumni Dan Aykroyd. Characters from Trading Places appear in Coming to America and in Coming 2 America a character played by Colin Jost is the son and nephew of those characters.
