A Sequel To ‘The Housemaid’ Is In Development With Sydney Sweeney Returning, Production Eyeing Start Date Later This Year

A sequel to The Housemaid has been greenlit and is scheduled to go into production this year, with star Sydney Sweeney returning, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Based on the novel of the same name by Freida McFadden, The Housemaid follows Millie, a woman trying to escape her past, who takes a job as a live-in housemaid for a wealthy couple, only to find a plethora of dangerous secrets hiding behind closed doors.

Directed by Paul Feig and released by Lionsgate, the adaptation was a critical and financial success, earning 73% Certified Fresh Rating on Rotten Tomatoes and grossing $133 million worldwide.

Now, an adaptation of the second book in the series, The Housemaid’s Secret, has been greenlit and is set to start filming later this year.

Lionsgate’s motion picture group chairperson, Adam Fogelson, spoke about the sequel in a statement announcing the greenlight:

“It’s clear from both the global box office and from the outpouring on social media that audiences have responded strongly — and audibly — to the totally unique and truly theatrical experience of The Housemaid and want to know what happens next…”

In addition to Sweeney, actor Michele Morrone, Feig as director and producer, screenwriter Rebecca Sonnenshine, producers Todd Lieberman through Hidden Pictures, and Laura Fischer through Feig’s Pretty Dangerous Pictures, are expected to return. Sweeney, McFadden, and Hidden Pictures’ Carly Elter and Alex Young will executive produce. While she has not yet been confirmed to return onscreen in the sequel, Amanda Seyfried from the original will return as executive producer.

A start date for the production of The Housemaid’s Secret has not yet been confirmed as of this writing.
