The exact role that Mikkelsen would play has not yet been named, however the Danish actor is rumored to be in early talks to play one of the villains opposite the Sorcerer Supreme-in-the-making, Doctor Stephen Vincent Strange, who will be played by Oscar nominated actor Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game, the BBC TV series Sherlock). Tilda Swinton (Trainwreck, The Grand Budapest Hotel) is already on board to play the Ancient One, who mentors Doctor Strange in the mystical arts.
Doctor Strange’s main nemesis, Baron Karl Mordo, has already been cast by Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years A Slave). In the comic books, Mordo is another student of magic under the Ancient One, however rather than using his powers to protect the Earth from supernatural threats as Doctor Strange does, the Baron turns to evil.
Mikkelsen is scheduled to appear in next year’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which will be released on December 16, 2016. Doctor Strange, directed by Scott Derrickson (Deliver Us From Evil, The Day the Earth Stood Still) from Jon Spaihts’ (Prometheus) screenplay, is currently in pre-production and is scheduled to hit theaters on November 4, 2016.
