In an absolutely astonishing turn of events A Minecraft Movie blew all its competition and nay-sayers out of the water landing the biggest opening for video game adaptation not adjusted for inflation for Warner Bros. and a video game adaption. Bringing in $157 million for opening weekend domestically A Minecraft Movie also earned $144 million over sees where its exploits included the ever elusive number one spot in China, where it topped the weekend chart with $14.6 million, beating We Girls at $11 million in second and Ne Zha 2 finally giving up its first place throne sending it to third.
After an extremely abysmal critical response a Minecraft Movie landed massive points with its target audience instead with Post Trak reports suggesting that the 17 to 13 year old male demographic also known for being repeat viewers carried the film to its 301 million opening followed closely behind 18 to 24 year old. Overall the total male audience accounted for 65% to a possible 67% with a remaining being made up of families who gave much more positive reviews with children giving notable 5 out of 5 stars.
On top of this stellar performance A Minecraft Movie also takes the title of being the best opening weekend since 2024’s Deadpool and Wolverine. Minecraft also beat out the Super Mario Bros movie from Universal and illumination which dominated Easter weekend in 2023 with $146.4 million.
A Minecraft Movie stared Jason Momoa, Jennifer Coolidge, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks and Sebastian Eugene Hansen as a group of misfits rocketed through a portal to the world of Minecraft where they meet Jack Black a Master crafter who guides them through the world with circles.
In 2nd was a tight battle with A Working Man netting $7.3 million beating The Chosen: Last Supper at $7.2 million in 3rd.
Snow White was knocked down to 4th in its third week with $6.1 million still falling short while Blumhouse’s The Woman in the Yard held on in 5th with $4.5 million.
6th saw A24’s Death of a Unicorn still struggling to hang on with a measly $2.7 million for a terrifyingly low total of $8.5 million grossed so far.
7th place also technically goes to The Chosen which is specifically the first episode with $1.9 million. 8th went to the directorial debut of Billy Bryk and Finn Wolfhard’s Hell of a Summer with $1.8 million for its opening week. The Friend climbed onto the board with $1.6 million for its second week landing in 9th. 10th went to Captain America: Brave New World with $1.4 million in its 8th just in time for Marvel’s next installment Thunderbolts* to come in.
