The nominees for the annual Golden Globes have been unveiled recently, showing which movies and TV shows are set to go head-to-head against each other at the awards show. And with the nominations come more insight into how the Academy Awards nominations will shape up.
In the competition for Best Picture are Killers Of The Flower Moon, Oppenheimer, Barbie, and Poor Things. Barbie, this year’s box office juggernaut, tied Cabaret from 1972 to become the second-most nominated film in Golden Globes history at nine nominations. As Variety points out, Barbie does have a sporting chance at taking home Best Picture at the Oscars.
Oppenheimer landed on all speculated nomination categories, especially for Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., and Emily Blunt. It will also face off against Barbie in three categories: Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Supporting.
Emma Stone landed herself the Best Actress nomination for Poor Things, going up against Margot Robbie’s work in Barbie. As Variety points out, Stone’s main competition at the Oscars is shaping up to be Lily Gladstone after being awarded by the National Board of Review and New York Film Critics for her performance in Killers Of The Flower Moon.
While the Golden Globes certainly can help predict how the Oscars will play out, some snubs this year were a surprise. But it is still possible for it to earn awards at the Oscars that it didn’t at the Globes. CODA went on to win Best Picture in 2022 after only earning two nominations at the Golden Globes.
Shockingly, Ridley Scott’s Napoleon, Michael Mann’s Ferrari, and Ava DuVernay’s Origin did not receive any nominations despite being hopeful for some. Other notable snubs include the score for Barbie and John Williams’ work for Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, one of the biggest surprises was the omission of Sound Of Freedom from the new box office achievement award. At the same time, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour did receive a nomination. The gross of Swift’s concert film was nothing short of impressive, but the chance of a nomination was up in the air due to its unusual release pattern. It is not eligible for any Oscar.
The 81st Golden Globes will air on January 7th, 2024.
