According to Deadline, the Lions of the Sea production is underway on the Galápagos Islands. Directed by JAMAICANOPROBLEM–aka Luis Felipe Fernández-Salvador y Campodocino–the documentary film is “an immersive journey into the compelling lives of sea lions in their unique environments.”
Along with JAMAICANOPROBLEM, the film is being produced by the former president of National Geographic Documentary Films, Adam Leipzig. Leipzig is one of those responsible for the March of the Penguins acquisition, an extremely successful documentary.
Guillermo Navarro, who won an Oscar for Best Cinematography on Pan’s Labyrinth, is not only an executive producer on the film but also in charge of a team of photographers that has been described as “the world’s best nature and underwater documentarians.”
Another Oscar-winner, Nicolas Becker, who won Best Sound on Sound of Metal, will work as sound designer for the documentary.
Serving as post-production producer will be Chadi Abo, who is recognized for his work on The Matrix Reloaded and 300, as well as The Cave, an Oscar-nominated documentary. Mido DeSanti will serve as co-producer.
Lions of the Sea is a Paracas Independent Films production. The company is “dedicated to producing high-quality, informative, and visually stunning films that showcase the beauty of the natural world through a lens of realismo fantastico, an original manifesto of its director, Luis Felipe Fernandez Salvador.”
Furthermore, a release on the film expands on the film’s realismo fantastico/fantastic realism, stating, “The film will be a work of fantastic realism, exploring the daily adventures, social dynamics, and remarkable role of sea lions in one of the most biodiverse and protected ecosystems on the planet.”
Before directing Lions of the Sea, JAMAICANOPROBLEM directed A Son of Man, Ecuador’s official selection for Best International Feature at the 2019 Academy Awards. In 2013, he also directed the short film El Cazador. His most recent work was the documentary film Waorani Omede Beye Ante Nee Adani, which focuses on an uncontacted Amazonian tribe.
On Lions of the Sea, JAMAICANOPROBLEM stated, “We will reveal the stunning character and beauty of Galápagos sea lions. The film will be an emotional journey of love and adversity. We aim to inspire audiences to appreciate and safeguard the natural wonders around us and raise awareness about the importance of conservation efforts to protect these magnificent creatures.”
