21st Critics’ Choice Award Winners

The Critics’ Choice Awards were handed out Sunday evening. Voted on by members of the Broadcast Film Critics Association, the largest critics group in North America selected the best achievements in cinema throughout 2015. Spotlight was named Best Picture, raising its Oscar hopes bit – the film received six Academy Award nominations earlier this week and remains a hopeful. Other winners include Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant), Brie Larson (Room) and Sylvester Stallone (Creed) in the acting categories; each picked Oscar nominations as well as earned Golden Globes last week. The fourth acting winner was Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl) in the Supporting Actress category, one which may prove the most difficult to predict.

‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ takes home 9 Critics’ Choice Awards.

While Spotlight won the top award of the evening, George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road earned bragging rights for the most wins of the evening- the film earned Miller Best Director prize as well as eight other prizes. Critics’ Choice has a share the wealth vibe considering the large amount of awards bestowed and special categories focusing on action, comedy and sci-fi films. The group also earned a bit of controversy recently when Star Wars: The Force Awakens was quickly added to their Best Picture line-up after nominees had already been announced – the J.J. Abrams blockbuster screened for critics after the Critics’ Choice deadline; the film did not win in the end.
