Hasbro has officially confirmed that there will be a Power Rangers reboot film. Power Rangers is an extremely popular children’s show and phenomenon, born of Japan’s Super Sentai. Power Rangers debuted in 1993 with the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers television program, and has had numerous shows, movies, video games, and toys since.
The premise of Power Rangers is about a group of teenagers who respond to a higher calling and become defenders of Earth from alien threats. The series was heavily influenced by Japanese shows of the “tokusatsu” genre, which depict live-action scenes with many special effects. The last Power Rangers film was released in 2017, and was expected to begin an entire cinematic universe, yet it was a critical failure. Power Rangers: Dino Fury currently airs on Nickelodeon, which means there is an entire new generation of fans. Hopefully the new reboot will be more successful and actually begin the cinematic universe that was expected to happen in 2017.
According to Screen Rant, at an investor event, Hasbro explained its commitment to “…creating a new universe for a broader audience across film, premium TV, animation & kids content.” End of the F***ing World and I Am Not Okay With This creator and director Jonathan Entwistle will be in the creative leadership role of the reboot. It’s still too early to tell what direction Hasbro plans to take Power Rangers, but with a director of more adult content, it seems that the new generation of Power Rangers will be like nothing we’ve seen before.
