A new report has revealed that Training Day is getting a prequel film and up and coming screenwriter Nick Yarborough will be writing the script. The prequel will take place in the same setting as the first film, only ten years earlier and focusing on the Los Angeles riots of 1992.

The original Training Day, which starred Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke, was well-received by critics and would lead to Washington winning an Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of crooked cop Alonzo Harris. The prequel will follow Harris in the lead role as a younger cop during the Rodney King riots. Not much further detail has been given on the project, but speculation leans towards Denzel’s son John David Washington being eyed to play the role his father took almost two decades earlier. 

There are still many roadblocks for this film, however. Yarborough has to produce a script worth Warner Bros. time to push the movie into production. In the meantime, John David Washington currently has existing commitments for Warner Bros with his upcoming role in Christopher Nolan’s Tenet. The young actor sure has his hands full before taking another step that would definitely add to his early, yet successful, career.
